Now you ask? If you were to ask before you buy, you might get a different reply other than "Have fun!".

So have fun!

Congrats on a nice kayak.

I like a headlamp...works as a safety light and for seeing your hands in front of your face when launching early.

I also roll with a small waterproof compass in case your battery dies on the GPS. It's saved my ass twice out there in the spring time when the fog pretty much comes out of no where.

Whoa there Petey Boy. Let's answer the question if we know the answer. It's not getting installed for a few weeks, and it was part of a discounted package at the FH Show. I'm not looking for someone to tell me I'm cool, but to tell me if the FF is a POS so I can upgrade (which I allready did on Monday).

Whoa Russell Potato Chips. The Cuda connectors is the #1 reason why you shouldn't get that FF. There are about 5-6 (I forget how many) pins that are closely nit next to each other. This will make it very difficult to keep clean, even with a Q-tip. The salt will eventually erode the pins and/or connector. The best solution around this would be to glue the male and female connectors together. How you install a FF on a kayak after that, I don't know. If you can't glue them together, then use Di-Electric Grease (Pep Boys). The grease is good for keeping saltwater away and making a good electric connection.

Do a search on the kayak sites for Fish finders, and see what other people are doing. The search function in your friend.

But it is too late, you already bought the upgrade so my opinion is moot. Here it is anyways. The Cuda FF is what I would call a $50 FF. Not really good, but better than nothing and cheap. Adding the GPS to any FF is not a good idea IMO. The Cuda I owned had 2 modes, either FF or GPS, it could not do both at the same time. Either I was paddling to a location, and missing all the great structures along the way, or I was in FF mode and lost.

I was so frustrated with the Cuda, I gave it away to my friend for free.
He had the Cuda 168, for 2 seasons. He is now having the connector problem I just described. I told him the Matrix is pretty good, but they are more expensive. Next time you are in the search for a new FF, look at the connectors, this is where most of the failures happen.

Rusty,

For kayakers, West Marine is a great way to go for electronics. Buy the two year warranty and you are golden. I've taken my FF and handheld VHF in probably 6 times for brand new units no questions - they even upgraded me when the model was discontinued. All that salt and splashing adds up to lots of burned out gear.

I'm sure Brent at OEX can offer some kind of warranty on top of what Cuda will offer. I know many guys that use them and haven't had the same issues that peter has.

Thanks for the input Peter. I like that... Russell Potato Chips... Like Ruffles

Is it possible to silicone over all the pins to seal them from water completely (or are these something I have to unplug to take the FF off my yak)? In that case I could use spray silicone on them after I rinse them off ? I will go look for them on my model. Mine does split screen GPS / FF. Were those the only problems you found with the Cudas?

FYI: I'm also super anal about keeping my fishing equipment clean and free of salt water, then completely dry before storage. I probably service my reels too much, and will be even more anal with my yak.

Dan... I might just do that. Thanks brotha.
