My first fishing kayak

I bought a Malibu X factor at the Fred Hall show in Del Mar a couple days ago. Got the center hatch live bait well and the Eagle Cuda 168 fish finder amongst some other extras. It will take till the end of the week for install.

Does anyone use the Cuda 168? What do you think of it?

Are running lights pretty important?

It will be used in La Jolla and on a few mothership trips this summer.

I only had lights on mine because I was hooping in the harbors at night.

So for early morning or foggy conditions I don't really need running lights I take it. I'm thinking safety more than anything.

Not many use running lights on Kayaks. I use and LED headlamp when it's foggy or launching LJ at 530 am. Have fun with your new yak!! The X-factor is a great ride!!

If it's dark you need a light. A single white light will do visible 360 deg, best on a pole that rises above your head.

Foggy conditions you cannot be seen, best have a GPS or you might find yourself somewhere between Catalina and Santa Rosa if you weren't run over by a tanker. Have a compass as a backup. Oh, and don't forget a VHF.

OK...
I'm upgrading to the GPS/Sonar combo and skipping out on the running lights.
...I'll steer clear of the shipping lanes AquaYak.

That's a long ways out but I see guys out there paddling those "sit inside yaks" packed to the gills with supplies etc. heading to Santa Cruz Island from C.I. Harbor thinking they're insane!

That's insane. Isn't Santa Cruz ~ 20 miles from CI Harbor? I used to sail with my friends parents from Ventura Harbor out to Santa Cruz on thier J40. It was a pretty long ride. We surfed Mar Meadows a lot.
