Yak Fishing Set Ups

I'm very new to the kayak sport fishing scene. I just started last Lobster season hoop netting and after much help from GetBent members I fell in love with the sport. I would like to get a trolling rig set up but have no clue where to start. Most of the deep sea fishing I’ve done has been chartered and spoon fed to me. I tried a few weekends ago casting squid around a rocky cove in Dana Point but had no luck. Would I have better luck trolling further out side the cove? There’s a great kelp bed further out that ½ day boats fish around. Any help with tackle set ups for casting or trolling would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I would keep your set-up relatively cheap in case you ever have the unfortunate event of rolling and losing your gear. I use a wide variety of gear. I use a Torium to throw irons and for jigging, I have an ebay special I use for trolling and I have various bait casters for bass and halibut. All my rods cost no more than $120 and as little as $60. Just depends on what you want to spend on gear. I was down in La Jolla and a guy lost a Trinindad. Nice reel but not worth losong on a yak!!!

i had an expeareance like that once in a conoo sorry about my spelling. i had some really good gear life jackets food and really costly shoes on.we got into a really bad drift hit rock sideways . sunk the conoo all my stuff wizzed down the river . and ruined my shoes. so think twice about puting gear in small boat. and fish love coves and dark areas.

If I were fishing outta Dana I would get bait at the receiver. Then make my way over to Doheny to soak the bait for some butts! Trolling at Dana and Trolling in LJ are two entirely different animals. When I think of trolling in Dana I think of frenzies and shallow water.

I likes to troll with a lever drag reel. My fav is the Daiwa LD50H which is out of production. Cheap, graphite and reliable. Best to ease off the drag when trolling live bait. Let the fish take eet. Then button down the lever and let 'er rip. You can get them from eBay for around 80 bucks new, when the opportunity arises.
