I have an Ocean Kayak Drifter and though it is certianly not fast it is extremely stable. The only drawback, as far as I'm concerned is that unless you want to sit in 4 inches of water you need to plug the scupper holes. Not a big deal. Besides sitting in a little water helps keep yer butt cool. Ain't gonna win any races but it's great for fishing.

Hey dude, I'm a big fat slob 5/10, 260lbs, BUT GOOD LOOKING. I use a malibu tandum 2 and I use it solo, and it floats me great (just like a barg). It is heavy to load but extremely stable. I hope this helps.

I am an Ocean Kayak man myself. I paddle the Prowler 15, and also have a Malibu 2 XL Tandem. Both suit me fine, for now. Both handle different jobs. For my personel paddling I use the Prowler. Can be a wet ride with me and my tackle store but it gets the job done. I fish with my kids and hoop of the tandem, as well as go for the Big Boys in the tandem. Nice to be able to pull the Thresher out of the water and stow it on the yak. Need more? Rhyno

Just 1/2c worth from me.
Speed = power or ease of paddling.

I also see this as a safety factor in case you have to paddle in to an unexpected headwind to get back home. On a "slow" yack you will quickly run out of gas

Maybe not a factor in California, but here most certainly.

Oh it can be a factor here if the Santa Anna Winds kick up,(nasty offshore devil winds!). Need to be able to get back to shore! Helps to know your limitations, watch the weather, and try to carry a hand held waterproof VHF when you head off shore. All part of the equation once you choose your yak. Now comes the hard part, test paddling a bunch and deciding what to buy. TL Rhyno
