If you like to cover a large area or are paddling a mile out to fish (La Jolla) it can make a big difference. A slow yak takes a lot more energy to get somewhere. Fast yaks are usually narrower and less stable, though.

Slow yaks are generally wider and more stable. If you're beginning, you may want to start with a more stable model.

It all depends if you just want to have a yak for paddling and racing or one with all the fishing gadjets on it like what Bajadave is doing to his....I've seen guys at C.I. Harbor blow my paddles off me they're paddling in little skivvy shorts going a mile out or so and paddling in....what a waste of energy...need to bring your fishing rod with you.

Speed is good to have in case you need it. MORE importantly is how the
yak will perform when conditions turn on you. The only time you really
notice the different speeds is if you're in a group with many different
yaks. Cruising they're all about the same....though you'll just notice
that some are using much less effort to maintain their cruising speed.

Plenty of guys paddle FnD's at LaJolla and here in Malibu and they do just as well as everyone else.

As for stability...all kayaks are stable..they're not meant/nor
supposed to flip over...some are just alot more stable than
others...though that is accomplished with less speed.

I paddle both a Prowler 15 and a Cobra FnD...both are at opposite ends
of the speed spectrum. Simply put do I want to take out the
Corvette...or the Caddy Escalade? Both will get me where I want to go.

Now if you want to talk FAST fishing yak....Hobie Adventure! It's been
clocked at just over 8mph! And I hear they're hoping to get a speeding
ticket from the Harbor Patrol! Cant beat that marketing ploy!
