landing fish ?

Ok, I did some bouncing around looking for a thread talking about dealing with large fish in a kayak, but couldn’t find much. How do you guys deal with a nice halibut, WSB, YT,…or WTF do you do with a huge bat ray when you get it up? I am looking forward to fishing some halibut and lingcod up here in Humboldt Bay...I just need to know what to do with the damn things when I get them up.

Cheers

I am looking forward to the answers on this one, particularly those fish that don't want to lie still once you have them aboard.

A good forum to ask that would be kayak4fish.com. Most of those guys are down in the LJ area and do a lot of YT and thresher fishing. I would assume if you have a big ray and you can't get to the hook just cut your line and with a shark you just lip em'.

Hey Seagipsy, I yak alot up at Half moon bay and what I do when I hook up with a big ling, is when you get it him up to your yak you need to move real slow with you hand and with a finger rub him between the eyes until he falls asleep. You will know when he is asleep when he turns upside down and stops moving.Ha Ha Ha No not really, when you get something big HOLD ON AND STAY UPRIGHT. Have fun and think safety first.

I have a gaff/club for toothy fish I am keeping.. Batrays and blues I just use wire cutters as close to the hook as I can get. I am more concerned with a threshers tail than its mouth when I land those...Just be careful....and stay safe

Landing big fish on the yak...

Big fish from the kayak requires a gaff longer than 3', a fish club or persuader, and a divers fish clip with a 3' piece of heavy rope or line connected to it, carry a net for F&G. Have the clip tied off on a sturdy point on the kayak before you start fishing. All big fish require more fight time, dont be too anxious to start the end game. Once the beast is relaxed enough to allow you a good, clean shoot with the gaff or net, take it. Be ready to drop the rod in a safe out of the way place,(tough on a yak). Next slip the opened fish clip up through the fish' gills, close the clip once you have the fish down on the clip. Remove the gaff or net, and now hold on to the clip if you can. If not let the beast thrash a little next to the yak, you may get a little wet, oh well Once you can grab the clip and hold the fish still proceed with the "Persuader" to ensure that the fish will join you for the BBQ. Larger fish like halibut can come back from the dead , so be prepared. If you can stow the fish inside the hull of the kayak in an insulated fish bag or similar do it. For big Threshers you better be on a tandem kayak so you can load the shark onto the kayak. Or be able to drag the large fish in, while watching out for the man in the grey suit. Last bit of advice is to have everything thought out, know your end game gear, and how to use it! TL Rhyno

Thanks for the advice. I was thinking about the diver’s stringer. When I spear fish I try and get the fish on the stringer ASAP. It seems that a big ling would be tricky…but I’ve done stupider things before!

Thanks again.
