Thresher shark etiquette??

What is the correct thing to do when hooked (i'm on a yak) to a Thresher that you don't want to land? Whether it tail hooked on a plug or hooked in da mouth?

Get it close and cut it loose? Try to get the plug out? Any thoughts or experiences??

Don't use stainless hooks and just cut it free. For plugs try your best to get it out if ya can (being safe for yourself) and if not then cut it free. I always say that if you know your going to have to or want to release something use a hook that will rust out quick.

Thanks, there has been quite a bunch of incidental Tshark hookups lately in La Jolla, just want to be prepared in case it happens to me. I personally don't care for the taste, but I'm sure the fight is epic!

Yup it's T-Time!!!
Dan best bet if you're going to be releasing is to mouth hook with bait. Doing it right and taking your time...dragging one up tailhooked with a rapala in it may drown it...not good if your plan is to release. Horsing one in results in a very green purple shark! And that's something you definitely dont want...especially if you're trying to remove a Rapala with nice sharp trebles on it.
Besides all of that a mouth hooked T is so much more fun...best aerial display short of a Marlin if you get em jumping. Trick here is to not have too much pressure on your line while pulling the bait around....dont want the hook to stick if it's swatting at the bait.
Now where's Rhyno!

And it just so happens that I have my "T gear" nearby!
Upgraded trebles on the raps as I had one big boy straighten out a stock one after being on for over an hour.
Custom ringed L2004's on 12ft of 150lb leader(I dont like the feel of anything bigger than 150lb test.)
