Bait tank question???

As some of you know i built a bait tank for my yak last sunday. well after charging the battery to full i plugged it in last night and the water is not flowing with the force i thought i would be. i think 1 of 3 things maybe wrong or a combo of all things...

1) i think the bilge pump i bought maybe too small i bought the rule 380gph one. i think it may be the smallest one they make.

2) i think my 3/4 inch id hose is too long. i can shorten it by 6 inches to a foot but not sure how much difference that will make.

3) i think the spray head i am using is constricting the water flow. i am using one for a sink so i dont see how the head would be too small but its just a thought in my head at this point.

while i do get water to flow into the tank its not really moving the water around.

help...

Dan:

As long as it fills and then drains at a higher point your fine....

It may make your battery last longer and smaller finbait will last longer....

They get beat up in the flow.......I have an adjustable attwood head....turned all the way down......as the bait fish were drowning!!!!!

ratpack its small maybe 4 gallos of water if that probably closer to 3 gallons.

Thanks for the insight randy i was expecting more water flow than i am getting after reading all the info on bait tanks. i dont want to injure the fish so i guess i am good i just thought that i'd be getting more water flow

Your pump is not the problem...plenty plenty of flow in the Rule you're using. Matter of fact, I will only use 6 volt for continuous flow as 12 volt can be too powerful for tanks 5 gal and under. When I use a 12 volt I toggle on and off every 15-20 minutes or so. A timer is cool but I guess I'm just too cheap to spend another $40...hehe. I don't use the spray nozzle but I do know people who do in combo with a 12 volt and the same pump without any problem. There may be a faulty part somewhere in your system. Btw, how long is your 3/4" tubing? The only kayak tanks I've built have been with tubing lengths of 2ft and under.

jas right now the 3/4 tubbing is about 3.5 feet. i'll start by shortening that see how it helps

May I ask what kayak you have and where you are placing the tank? Sounds like you're off to a good start by cutting down your 3/4 tubing a bit. The pump doesn't need to go too far into the water...matter of fact, the more shallow the better as far as water restistance, kelp or other surface debris is concerned. Again, this is just from my experience. Everyone has a little different (some times dramatically different) of an experience...results will usually vary.

Hey Dan I wouldnt use a spray head I would use an angle fitting so you can point the nozzle in a circular flow.
