The rig i used was a balloon rig...

Very similer to this below

The bait i used was a whole gar fish or as we call them here is australia "gardies" with 8 ganged hooks in a row with a 150pound wire trace.

This is the cliff gaff below
[IMG]

You get your fish to the base of the cliffs then hook cliff gaff onto your line and lower it down by rope. When it gets about a meter away from your fish let it free fall. This wil cause the arms to swing open and the gaff hooks to hook up around your fish ....Then pul it up :)

This is the campsite at steep point. As you can see its only a 10sec walk from the tent to the cliff edge..

We call this rig a "gang hook rig"

We use bait called "mulie" Its a small fish like a large sardnine and we thread the gang hooks on starting fron the tail to the eye of the bait so if a fish comes up from behind and chomps it it will find the hook

Went fishing for Australian salmon today.

Today is Anzac day here in Australia. We get the day off work.
ANZAC is the Australian and Newzealand armed forces who have fought and given there lives to keep Australia a free and lovley safe place to live.
Some info below if you would like to read....

ANZAC Day - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

While fishing i took the time to think of the diggers who put there lives on the line and gave there lives so we have a free country to fish and relax like i did today :)
Went wih a few mates.
I lost 2 Salmon.
One was average size and the other was a HORSE!!!! My guess would of been 9kg!!!! It had a float haing from its mouth that someone else had lost before.
It now has a set of gang hooks to the list because i lost it
VERY rough swell today! In the pics it looks calm but there were some monster waves coming through!
I was soaked most of the day.
Here are some pics below.... Mate Scano got this nice salmon!

Went for a flick at the North mole this morning. We have a North and south mole which are the entrance to our port and river as pictured below...

Got drenched wet!
Caught about 4 Bonito :)
The one pictured below was a very good sized one!
Took 2 home and just whacked em on the BBQ! Very nice!
Out of everyone on the mole i was the only person catching them

I finally have got around to doing a "making gang hooks" post :)

Will be great if some of you try make some and tell me how you go using "gang hooks"

Step 1: Start off by getting the special tool to make the gangs. Its $30 aust dollars. You can use sidecutters to open the eye of the hook if you dont have this tool in the states.

Step2: Place eye of hook in the "eye opener" and adjust the screw at the back of the tool down to stop you squeezing down to far so you dont open the eye to much and snap eye of the hooks. Squeeze down till the eye opens a little.

Step3 :Now that you have opend the eye of the hook up, thread a hook through the eye of the hook you have already opened
[IMG]

Step 4: Time now to close the eye. This is very basic. Insert the eye into one of the grooves in the end of the tool and squeeze shut and again, if you dont have access to this tool, you can use plyers.

The end result.......
Ready for my fishing trip :)

Usually is really good fshing but while we were there it was dangerous to fish the cliffs.

Here are a couple of pics...
It was a funny trip away with the first laughs starting when we were driving up there. We had been driving for 7 hours and i seen a sign saying " shire of shark bay " We missed the Kalbarri turnoff by 120klm!!!!!!!!!!
Lucky we had just enough fuel to get back to Kalbarri!
As soon as we got unpacked we went strait to the cliffs. DAMM! It was rough as! Massive swells! Couldnt fish goats gulch all week!
Tryed to fish red bluff but had a few close calls so we gave that a miss.
Fished fishermans jetty in the river all week. Landed a total of i recon about 50 undersized mulloway! At least the river is very healthy
Only beach spot fishable was blue holes. Caught 3 good sized skippy. Lots of bust offs . I was using occy on the bottom.
Had a few injuries , fell down a hole in the reef at blue holes and cut knee up
I was lazy and threw knife into my fishing bag then went into my bag to get tackle out and sliced finger open on the knife
Oh well it was a good holiday away from work

While the big baits were out i was using my little wippy rod with 8 pound line. Had it sitting out there for a while then felt a slow pull on the line. I struck! Then as i was pulling it in i seen that it was a lovley blue manna crab!

These crabs are really great to eat.
This crab was psyco! I coulnt go near the esky without it trying to stick its claws out and try to nip me!

Heres tha pic...
